An anxiety attack or full panic attack can occur at any time with no warning. There will be no obvious reason, no stressful situation, and no indicator that an anxiety or panic attack might be impending. A panic attack is one of the most stressful situations that any sufferer can undergo. It can come out of nowhere or be triggered by an extended period of anxiety or stress.   • Numbness or a tingling sensation in your face and limbs
  • Chills or hot flushes

Unfortunately the physical reaction of your body, when it is suffering from the effects of excessive stress and anxiety, is difficult to understand. Most people misunderstand the signals that the body is giving out. It is common to think its something you ate, or perhaps didn’t take the time to eat, that is causing the uneasy feeling your body is reporting. You try to relax, try to catch your breath, adopt a restful attitude. Except when you’re having a panic attack, it’s anything BUT restful because the uneasy feeling just builds and builds swamping all your senses and places you in the fight or flight mode.

You usually begin to feel a bit “off” colour, have trouble breathing, your body feels disconnected and your heart beat increases to what seemed like 90 miles an hour. You can’t catch your breath. It starts to feel like your dying. Your mind starts thinking what’s happening to me? but gets no logical answer, so the symptoms increase due to your anxiety over the way you feel.

You would be surprised at how many people go to the hospital emergency room completely convinced that they’re having a heart attack only to find out that it’s a panic attack.  Their that intense!

It’s difficult enough for you to understand, but what of those around you that love and care about you. They don’t feel what your feeling and cannot even begin to imagine or even understand what you are going through when you have a full on panic attack. They may lose patience with you, tell you to “get over it”, or think you’re faking it. This is commonly the cruelest aspect of a panic attack, the lack of consideration about how you feel and the actual debilitating impact of a panic attack on you.

It is very important that you speak openly with loved ones and key friends about your condition. Your children must be included in the discussions, even though the first thought is to spare them. If they have a concept of your illness then it is less frighting if they are present during a major attack.

As you get to know the trigger points to your attacks, and you will find a lot of them. Discuss them openly with those you have spoken too, so where possible you can all avoid letting then occur. Openness is a major key to the fight in gaining the upper hand on this issue. A lot of people do get over the problem through medication or mind control, but most learn their own specific control methods that they need to apply.
